Social media news everyone! In celebration of Twitter’s 5th birthday (woohoo!) Twitter spent the morning tweeting out Twitter milestones of its services. Back in the day (five years ago) Twitter announced there were 224 tweets sent on July 15 (its launch day) and that now users send that many tweets in less than a tenth of a second. Insert double take here; now users send that many tweets in less than a tenth of a second. Now those are some powerful social media statistics.
As if that stat wasn’t stunning enough, Twitter also announced receiving more than 600,000 sign ups yesterday — compare that to the fact it took the social network more than 16 months to reach the first 600,000 Twitter accounts.
Twitter also released its own “items shared” number, 350 billion tweets a day. Is it a coincidence that this number came just after Google announced a billion items shared daily on Google+? Here’s a hint: it’s not.
